Symptoms of scalp conditions

The symptoms of scalp conditions depend on the exact condition, but they include:

• rashes
• hair loss or hair thinning
• weak hair and breakages
• itchiness
• scaly patches
• pain
• tenderness

The main symptom of alopecia is losing more hair than usual, but this can be harder to identify than you might think.

The following symptoms can provide some clues:

• Widening part. If you part your hair, you might start to notice your part getting wider, which can be a sign of thinning hair.
• Receding hairline. Similarly, if you notice your hairline looking higher than usual, it may be a sign of thinning hair.
• Loose hair. Check your brush or comb after using it. Is it collecting more hair than usual? If so, this may be a sign of hair loss.
• Bald patches. These can range in size and can grow over time.
• Clogged drains. You might find that your sink or shower drains are clogged with hair.
• Pain or itching. If you have an underlying skin condition causing your hair loss, you might also feel pain or experience itching on your scalp.

Typical to lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). With about 100,000 hairs on your head, that small loss isn’t noticeable. New hair normally replaces the lost hair, but this doesn’t always happen.

• Psoriasis typically results in scaly, silvery, sharply defined skin patches.
• It’s commonly located on the scalp, elbows, knees, and lower back.
• It may be itchy or asymptomatic (producing or showing no symptoms

Seborrheic eczema (cradle cap)

Is a common inflammatory skin condition that causes flaky, scaly patches on the skin, especially the scalp. When those flakes fall off, it’s called dandruff.

Tinea capitis

• This is a fungal infection that affects your scalp and hair shafts.
• Itchy, flaky patches appear on the scalp.
• Brittle hair, hair loss, scalp pain, low fever, swollen lymph nodes are other possible symptoms.

 Ringworm

or tinea capitis, is a fungal skin infection that produces ring-like patches. It’s common in children.

Traction alopecia

Traction alopecia results from too much pressure and tension on the hair, often from wearing it in tight styles, like braids, ponytails, or buns.

If you’re undernourished, your body will put what vitamins and minerals it does receive into necessary functions like blood flow to the heart and vital organs. The hair and nails, at the extremities of the body, receive any leftovers.

Ensure your hair gets the nutrition it needs with an antioxidant-rich diet including good fats from salmon, nuts, and avocados, whole grains, and plenty of fruits and vegetables.

One cause of hair loss in women can be hormonal imbalances. Having an overactive or under active thyroid gland may cause thinning hair. However, if the hormone imbalance is corrected, the hair loss should stop.

Androgenetic alopecia is a regular cause of hair loss. It influences an estimated 50 million men and also 30 million females in the USA.

Childbirth may result in sudden hair loss in women. It's common for many women to notice hair loss after pregnancy - immediately 3 months after they've had a baby. This too is caused by hormones. But this is not something to worry about. During pregnancy, hair shedding during the normal hair cycle is retarded in by high levels of hormones. Once the hormones have returned to pre-pregnancy levels, this extra hair is shed with the normal cycle of hair growth and loss returning over time.

Hair Loss from Menopause and Hormonal 

Some causes can come from hormonal therapies such as Progesterone, a female hormone that inhibits the development of a new follicle. Hair loss and menopause are commonly linked and result in thinning hair in older women. Before menopause, about 13 percent of women experience hair loss. After menopause, reporting of the problem from women increases to about 37 percent.
